Artis Zoo

ARTIS Zoo, founded in 1838, is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in Europe. Established by zoology enthusiasts Gerard Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann, and J.J. Wijsmuller, it was originally a private society named Natura Artis Magistra, meaning "Nature is the teacher of art."
