Artis Zoo

ARTIS is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of Europe’s oldest. It is home to over 900 species of animals, including elephants, lions, and giraffes, as well as a planetarium, Micropia museum (the world’s only microbe museum), and beautiful botanical gardens. Visitors can enjoy a blend of wildlife, science, and history, with historic buildings and 27 listed monuments within the grounds. ARTIS Zoo, founded in 1838, is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in Europe. Established by zoology enthusiasts Gerard Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann, and J.J. Wijsmuller, it was originally a private society named Natura Artis Magistra, meaning "Nature is the teacher of art."
